Sigma 85 1.4 Lens Review

I had been agonizing for so long over which new lenses to bring into my collection and finally settled on the Canon 85 L 1.2.  Fortunately for me, I discovered the Sigma equivalent, the 85 1.4.  There are a lot of photographers out there who swear there is nothing that can even come close to a canon lens on a canon body.  After having the Sigma on camera for a short session, I will have to disagree with the majority and recommend you go out and buy this lens!

I would like to preface this by saying that I do not do reviews on a regular basis, I will focus more on the usability of the lens as opposed to the technical aspects.  Also, I have only had the opportunity to use the 85 L once, so instead, I will use the canon 50 1.4 as a basis for comparison.

Personally, I am a huge fan of flare and was very excited to see how this lens rendered direct light.  Very very pleased with the result.  When compared with my 50 1.4, colours are not overly washed out with minimal spotting.

The sharpness and detail that came out of this lens was impressive.  Very sharp wide open at 1.4.  I was lucky enough to come across a good copy as focusing speed was quick and accurate with no MA adjustment required (much quicker than the 85 L).  The lens is also a very usable weight, light enough to have on camera for a whole day and then some.  Build quality is very good with the lens being both professional looking and aesthetically pleasing.

My recommendation – go for the Sigma 85 1.4 and save yourself a ton of money with no reduction in quality!

Cheers,

Chris
