Jamaica!

I had the amazing opportunity to shoot my very first destination wedding this past January in Negril, Jamaica.  I have been to a number of Caribbean destinations and Jamaica has been my favourite so far.  Maybe it was the 5-star resort, or maybe it was the amazing jerk chicken hut on the beach, either way, I can’t wait to go back!

Here are a couple non-wedding related shots from my trip.  Hope you enjoy!

These birds were everywhere!  Still don’t know what they are called though…

Michelle and Sean … NOT an engagement session – by London Wedding Photographer Chris Liehmann

Chris Liehmann

Over Christmas, I took a couple shots of my sister and her boyfriend Sean since they had never had any “professional” shots taken.  I figured we would forget about the professional and just go out and take some photos after it had snowed.  I got permission to publish these photos only if I made it quite clear that they weren’t engagement photos .. so hopefully I don’t get in trouble!

I have known my sister for a long time .. all my life.. and Sean for much less time.  Already, I can tell these two work really well together and I’m excited to see where things go for them!

Here are a couple shots … hope you like them Toronto wedding photography Toronto wedding photographer

Charan portrait session – train tracks and Webster’s Falls

When I first met Charan, we sat down and I asked her what kind of photos she would like to have taken.  She responded by telling me that she wanted me to capture where she is in her life right now.  Awesome! An abstract shoot that would allow me to flex my creative muscle!  I had no idea where to begin.

I asked her to tell me about her life and everything that has lead her to this point.  Eventually, I discovered that she feels as if she has been wandering, often with little direction, and is now at a decision point in her life.  She feels change approaching.  This was my task – capture a mindset, a feeling and emotion.

Here is how it turned out…

Facebook, Friends and Mentors

One of the most common questions people ask me is how I got into photography.  I tell everyone the same story – I just bought a DSLR, started taking photos and the rest unraveled as I went along.  I make it sound as if everyone can accomplish the same thing and I still believe it!  There are, however, a few small things that can help an aspiring photographer on their way to enlightenment:

1) decent equipment

2) the internet

3) excellent photography books

4) a mentor

I want to write today about the influence one of my best friends had on my progression as a photographer (number 4 on the list).  In honour of her birthday last week (she is spending it in Hawaii surfing – ugh so jealous!), I would like to tell you tell you a little bit about her and how she impacted me.

Shortly after I bought my first camera, I was perusing Facebook and noticed one of my colleagues in undergrad had some excellent shots taken.  Recently inspired and looking to get into portrait photography, I naturally messaged the person who had taken the photo asking if perhaps we could go shooting sometime.  Fortunately for me, this was a little before the days of random facebook messages from strange men and she subsequently agreed to meet me at the Williams across from the McMaster hospital in Hamilton.

First impressions of Jin Sol Sohn:

- she smiled a lot

- she had no reservations with allowing a strange man into her car and driving him all over town to take photos

- she was a little different than most people I had met

- she was an old soul

- she was a mover

So we ventured on our way, off to take some photos of her sister and a few horses at a nearby farm in Dundas – my first portrait shoot!

Fortunately, I had just made my first lens purchase after many hours of research and deliberation (a Tamron 18-250mm).  Even now, I recommend anyone who is started out to get a good quality superzoom lens (one that has a wide range of focal lengths).  This allows you to experiment with wide to telephoto settings before investing lots of $$$ into the higher quality equipment that has a more limited range.

So we got to the place, drove up the hill and excited to try out my new lens and recently acquired polarized filter, I took a couple shots of the horses.

By far one of the most comical shots I have ever taken….

Apologies for not including any of the portrait shots – like I said, it was my first time and as you can expect they weren’t that great!  My new found friend Jin Sol, however, was amazing – showing me all these new places around the Dundas/Hamilton area, always coming to pick me up to go on shoots…staying up late to talk about life, love and what really matters.  In addition to becoming one of my best friends, she also became a fantastic wedding photographer – a direction I never felt I would pursue myself, but seem to now have followed in her footsteps.  I have learned an incredible amount from her and have realized recently that she has acted as somewhat of a mentor for me, despite the fact that we have walked through the photography journey together.

Now out in Halifax, she has removed her website and decided to postpone wedding photography work to pursue other adventures throughout the year.
I can’t stress the importance of finding someone to inspire you as an aspiring photographer, someone who will critique your work (like one of my favourite waterfall shots below) and praise you when its deserved.

If you can also find someone to walk through your journey beside you, to see what you see, you will be well-equipped to enter the world of photography.  I am lucky enough to have found both in one person.  Turns out Facebook is good for more than just wasting time after all.

She still has a Facebook group up so be sure to check out some of her work (older stuff).  I am going to have to bug her to get a site back up and running.

Thanks for reading, will be adding more recent photos very soon!
